 | Practical Theory Complete : A Self-Instruction Music Theory Course by Sandy Feldstein. Thorough, basic, self-paced theory workbook. Order from Amazon.com | | Harmony & Theory : A Comprehensive Source for all Musicians (Essential Concepts (Musicians Institute).) by Keith Wyatt and Carl Schroeder. Highly recommended theory book for those who want to improve their understanding of music. Order from Amazon.com | | Study of Counterpoint by Johann Joseph Fux, Alfred Mann (Translator). Influential book from early 18th century. Fux invented strict (species) counterpoint to imitate the "Palestrina style." His book was studied by most of the important 18th-century composers.

Best used by a student already comfortable with fundamentals, this book requires thinking, but the results are rewarding.

Designed to be graded by a knowledgeable instructor (this is not a self-study course). For many students this first volume will be plenty. A second volume is available for the second half of the textbook.

Order from Amazon.com | | Treatise on Harmony by Jean Philippe Rameau, Philip Gossett (Translator). Rameau's treatise defined the course of common-period theory. This English translation makes an important historical source available to many more readers.
